Can you restore a deleted issue in Jira Cloud?
Short answer: not with Jira alone. When a work item (issue) is deleted in Jira Cloud it is removed immediately, together with its comments, work logs, attachments and sub-tasks. There is no trash or recycle bin for work items, unlike Confluence pages.
Your options after a deletion
- Check whether it was deleted or moved. Search for the summary text; a moved work item gets a new key but keeps its history.
- Look for copies. Email notifications, exports, linked Confluence pages or another tool’s sync may contain the content.
- A site backup restore brings back the whole site to an earlier point — usually far too disruptive for one work item.
- Ask Atlassian Support — but recovery of individual work items isn’t generally possible.
Make the next deletion recoverable
Restore tools can only bring back what they recorded before the deletion, so they must be installed in advance. Safety Net for Jira keeps a copy of each work item from installation on, and puts deleted work items in a recycle bin with their comments, work logs, links and sub-tasks.
It also helps to limit who can delete: in your permission scheme, give Delete work items only to administrators.
Safety Net for Jira adds the missing undo, and it’s coming soon to the Atlassian Marketplace: Coming soon — get notified.
